Anyone interested in gaining an entry in the light motor vehicle industry can now register at Esayidi FET College without having to travel to Olifantsfontein in Gauteng to be tested. An apprenticeship is a contract between an employer and an employee whereby the employer provides ‘on the job’ in service training, and the employee has to undergo specific theoretical training at a recognised training institution.
To date anyone on the South Coast who wanted to complete a trade test as a motor mechanic, would have had to serve a minimum of three years with a recognised employer and have studied a minimum of N2 with the relevant trade theory. He/she would then have had to travel to Olifantsfontein in Gauteng to undergo the Department of Labour’s trade test and, if successful, would have be issued with a certificate with a red stamp that is recognised both nationally and internationally.
Enyenyezi Campus, in Boboyi, has also been accredited for electrical engineering as apprenticeship training.
This is a big advantage for the region and is sure to attract a lot of interest from further afield. The first learnership was launched at the Port Shepstone Campus, Oslo Beach, in March 2009.
